BENTON provides

powerful batch processing and task management capabilities

Available for Unix and Windows with the best integration with IBM's UniVerse, UniData and related data management products.

BENTON Overview

BENTON is an advanced batch processing and task management system. BENTON users can schedule programs and procedures to run on almost any schedule, to run once now or later, or to run on a repeating basis.

BENTON allows companies to realize significant savings. BENTON installations have reduced time spent by operators running repetitive jobs and improved the reliability of data center operations. System administrators use BENTON to delegate administration of these kinds of repetitive tasks.

BENTON also includes comprehensive reporting capabilities which provide detailed reports about the activities of jobs and the BENTON system. BENTON running on UniVerse and UniData also provides the same commands for job submission that are available with the Prime 50 Series PRIMOS Batch subsystem, greatly enhancing the compatibility among these platforms. BENTON is also supported on the legacy PI/open data management system and is full replacement for Batch/open.

BENTON's advanced task management features provide new and powerful dimensions to your applications. BENTON can dramatically reduce the time you spend administering your system and can assist in easily utilizing off-hours system time.

BENTON Productivity Benefits

Our users have realized productivity increases and costs savings through three strategies

BENTON Features

Support for  command line statements, paragraphs, sentences, remotes, procs, plus operating system commands and stored procedures. Paragraphs and sentences may contain in-line prompts, LOOP/REPEATs, IF/THEN expressions and labels. Paragraphs, sentences and procs may contain input statements which will be interpreted in advance of job activation. Variable answers can be provided, which will change during a job's activation period.

Scheduling options include immediately, today, tomorrow, a specific day-of-week, specific date or work day in the month. Schedule types can be mixed in each job. Schedule exceptions can be easily used, including 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th day of the week. BENTON holidays can be established to suspend execution of jobs on specific dates. Jobs can also be held temporarily, and can be scheduled to begin on a specific date and expire on another.

Command line and screen-based user interfaces are available, both fully complemented with help facilities. Job activation uses the user id of the user who submitted the job, inheriting the access rights and environment of this user.

Interactive resolution of paragraphs, sentences and procs containing prompts is included with BENTON, along with augmented in-line prompt features which provide variable answers to tasks as they proceed through their activation schedule.

Dependencies to order and activate jobs based on the completion of a preceding job can be easily established; as well as simple first-in, first-out job queuing, with per-job priorities. COMO file management, for storing and reporting each job's activity and output provides, an instant window into a job's activities and output.

History reporting and calendar reporting, plus customizable reporting options, provide a wealth of information about job schedules and past activations.

PRIMOS Batch compatible commands on open systems platforms include JOB, BATCH and BATGEN. The BENTON JOB command supports job submission options documented in current PRIMOS revisions, plus BENTON's calendar scheduling and control options.

A high degree of reliability and robustness for commercial, academic and government applications is built into BENTON's design.

BENTON Task Support

BENTON gives you the flexibility of scheduling jobs residing in the database environment or in the operating system environment. In the database environment, you can schedule any command line expressions, as well as paragraphs, sentences, remotes and procs. Paragraphs, sentences, remotes and procs do not need any alteration to be run as BENTON tasks. Paragraphs, sentences, remotes and procs can be simple "straight line" tasks, or contain most combinations of looping, IF/THEN logic and in-line prompts. BENTON supports scheduling of paragraphs, sentences and procs by interpreting the prompts present in the task either when the job is given to BENTON or at any time prior to when the job is actually run. You answer the prompts as if the job was actually running - and BENTON stores your answers and applies them to the job when it runs it.

BENTON also provides powerful enhancements to prompt responses, called BENTON variables, which provide the ability to use prompt answers which will vary as the job proceeds through its activation schedule.

Operating system commands can also be scheduled in BENTON. In the Unix environment, shell commands and scripts can be scheduled. In Windows, batch files and console commands can also be easily scheduled.

BENTON Scheduling Options

You can tell BENTON to automatically run your tasks daily, weekly, monthly or immediately. BENTON also understands special dates such as the second Saturday, third Tuesday or the last day of the month. You can also tell BENTON when your work days are during the month, and schedule your tasks on the 10th work day, first work day, or all work days. BENTON also respects your wishes concerning the time you want your task to run. Any number of times can be entered, 5 pm, 1:30 am, every hour, and so forth.

BENTON will also remember when to begin using the schedule for the job, and when the job expires so it won't be run anymore. Also, you can tell BENTON when to take a holiday, and jobs that normally run on that day will not be.

BENTON jobs can be held and not run until you say so, plus all schedule types can be combined for a single job.

BENTON User Interfaces

All BENTON features are available through user friendly input and inquiry screens or you can tell BENTON what to do using command line options. BENTON includes a friendly full-screen menu-based interface which will prompt you step by step through the process of schedule and changing jobs, as well as seeing reports and displays. BENTON for Windows also includes a graphical client program that provides all of BENTON's features through the familiar Windows interface.
